I’m baffled and practically embarrassed to realize the number of health and clinical search databases that have been available to me for the past two years as I have struggled through Pro Quest to find relevant results for my different projects and tasks in this program. I didn’t know about over half of these research tools; however, I am appreciative to have found them before embarking on my profession later on.
Using the picot question, the first thing I did in the search engine was framing. In the PICOT question, I highlighted different descriptors terms by identifying the primary elements that would help find peer-reviewed sources. The terms in the search follow the P-I-C-O sequence. Using a time case factor element of 1 year, I narrowed my search to obtain appropriate results. The last thing I did in this literature search process is filtering the evidence by narrowing or expanding the research. Further correlation of more inquiry tests can be accomplished after the last step.

Picot Question: “(P) For hospitalized patients on a general medicine unit with Foley catheters, (I) does implementation of nursing Foley bundles, accompanied with continual education on Foley bundles, (C) compared to using no nursing Foley bundles/continual education, (O) decrease the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections during those patient’s hospital stay, (T) over one year?”

CINAHL
CINAHL is an SU subscription-only resource that offers full text access to 336 scholarly journals and indexes over 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. Indexed journals do not provide access to full-text. Just because it is indexed in does not mean the library has full-text access to the journal. SU can always request articles for students via Interlibrary Loan, but the service is not instantaneous

Try the CINAHL Heading search:

Keyword search: “catheter associated urinary tract infections” or CAUTI.

Limits:
CINAHL Heading search:
Limits: June 2015-June 2020.
There are ten articles that are relevant to the framed search question in this database.
Large number of results remain even after customizing and limiting results to a very specific degree.
The most exciting thing about the CINAHL database is that it only provides articles that correlate with the PICOT elements of the framed research question.
PubMed
PubMed is a free health science citation & abstracts index from the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Keyword search:
Limits: “nurse removal” AND foley catheter

MESH search:
Limits: June 2015-June 2020.

The number of articles that discuss the association between foley bundles and the reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infections is 789.
Already familiar with PubMed engine, it is used for many of the projects and discussions in this program throughout. Not as precise results as the other search engines
Cochrane Library
Cochrane Library provides access to the Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews. Full text of reviews is subscription only. Index summaries are a public resource. Indexed journals do not provide access to full-text. Just because it is indexed in does not mean the library has full-text access to the journal. SU can always request articles for students via Interlibrary Loan, but the service is not instantaneous

Keyword search: “catheter associated urinary tract infections” OR CAUTI AND “nurse-led removal” AND prevention

Limits:
MESH search:
Limits: 2015 to 2019; trials

The database produced 1021 trials after searching the MeSH term in the framed question.
Easy to distinguish type of search result varying from reviews to RCT’s. Aids in organization of research results- also massive access to many trial reports that I have not previously discovered in other search engines, perhaps because they were not separated and organized in this fashion.

The library contains zero articles on the framed PICOT.
The database does not provide search results for the research question even after reframing the research question. The database requires the usage of complex.

The database has seven results for the PICOT question.
Excellent organization of results, color coding makes it user friendly. Relevant systematic reviews of previous trials to current topic.
