NUST08011 Nursing Care And Decision Making
Question:
Write about the (Improving face to face communication skills while nursing patients on a medical ward).
Answer:
Face to face communication is an important skill for any nursing practitioner, especially when admitting patients in endoscopy who are having a gastroscopy procedure. Such patients have special needs that require critical face to face communication skills when handling them. The ability to provide for patients is improved especially individualized care when the practitioner has good communication skills (Kourkouta & Papathanassiou 2014, p. 65). With face to face communication, as a practitioner it increases patient feelings of love, safety, and confidence which lead to increased outcomes. McCarthy, Buckley, Engel, Forth, Adams & Cameron (2013, p. 443) suggest that since nurses are care providers and the link between different practitioners like physicians and doctors, I require face to face communication when dealing with both the patient and other providers in endoscopy department.
Since endoscopy patients are admitted with different healthcare needs, then interpersonal, intellectual, confidence and technical skills are important in this sector. As a practitioner, I not only interact with the patient but also family members who lack nursing knowledge. This means that I require more than speaking but rather other enhanced abilities like reading body language when interacting with such individuals (Kourkouta & Papathanassiou 2014, p. 66). The deficiency that I have in this skill needs to be improved to achieve better nursing outcomes for the patient, the family and for myself as a practitioner. As a second-year student, this skill goes a long way in improving my abilities and ensuring that I become a better nursing practitioner with the ability to relate well within the section that I work in.
Critical review of Kourkouta, L. & Papathanasiou2, I. V., 2014. Communication in Nursing Practice. Materia Socio Medica, 26(1), pp. 65-67.
In their article, Kourkouta & Papathanasiou (2014, p. 65) suggest that effective communication is based on the understanding of patients and the way they express themselves. This means that the practitioner has to be concerned with what the patient requires and the same time ensure that the message that the nurse conveys is understandable by the patient. Humans have their own code of communication that they use to interpret messages thus the practitioner must be careful with the use of face to face communication when admitting patients in endoscopy who are having a gastroscopy procedure. The practitioner needs to apply the principles of listening and good personal relationships when handling such patients. Face to face communication makes the patient comfortable and reduces any misunderstandings in the message. The authors conclude that communication is part of the Hippocratic medicine process that requires practitioners to be empowered with the right skills that improve the quality of care and service to humans.
One area that is missing in this article it lacks the scientific method since it did not use literature analysis or any case in developing the arguments. The arguments on based on pure literature which is not a comparison of different models. A good peer-reviewed article needs to be based on an existing gap in literature while at the same time forming new knowledge generalizations that can be used in the future (Garland 2015, p. 15). The role of scientific evidence is to prove the importance of different aspects of communication by showing evidence on how they were tested and proved to be effective.
Further, the article fails to present a model for communication in the healthcare setting that practitioners can adopt. To apply the principles of communication, practitioners require a model of communication that defines the different processes of communication and how they can be applied in the nursing environment. According to Colquitt & George (2011, p. 433), this article does not meet the grand challenge standards since it does not create any new knowledge in the field. Since communication situations vary, practitioners require models with steps on how they can handle the nursing communication issues that they face in the organization.
From the article, I have learned that face to face communication is an important skill for any nursing practitioner since it improves the relationship of the practitioner with the patient. By applying face to face communication, the practitioner creates confidence in the patient which makes them comfortable with the gastroscopy procedure.
