NUR 0066 Nutrition For Clinical Practice
Question:
Discuss how you anticipate that your new knowledge of family nursing will enhance your practice of nursing.
Answer:
Family nursing will be relevant to my practice in that it will help me improve my skills of communicating with patients and their families. Communication with a patient’s family helps to extract information regarding the history of disease, co morbidities and risk factors that the patient may not share. In addition, the patient’s family also helps nurses to understand the patient’s culture, health beliefs and values. According to Friedman, Bowden, & Jones, (2003) family nursing also helps advice family members on how to handle and meet the patient’s care requirements outside the hospital setting. Lastly, family nursing knowledge will also be essential in improving patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction is improved when nurses adopts a patient centered approach to care by focusing on individual patient needs and minimizing errors of generalization and assumptions.
1.Amazing post! I agree with you that a patient’s family has the greatest influence in a patient’s life. In addition, the patient’s family may also give clues regarding diseases that may be passed on genetically. It is also clear that from the patient’s family, it is possible to extract patient’s beliefs, values and socioeconomic status.
2.I like the way you define family nursing practice as the provision of family care to families and family members in the health and illness situation. I agree with you that nurses will always have something to learn from the patient’s family that will help in dealing with the patient’s needs. Lastly communication with a patient’s family helps to guide the family on how to handle the patient better.
