Patient safety as well as quality care are considered indistinguishable from one another according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (Huber, 2013). The nurses nowadays play noteworthy roles in providing both. Besides assisting the doctors, they also supervise the progress of the patient’s condition, provide prescribed medicines and educate the patients along with their families on preventive methods of diseases and post–hospital care and treatment.
In order to provide necessary care to the patients the nurses are at first provided with the required knowledge upon basic physiology and anatomy to grow the fundamentals of pathophysiology. The nurses are also emphasized to understand the pharmaco-dynamic along with pharmaco-kinetic principles of safe application of drugs along with the evaluation of the respective effects (Frankel & PGCMS, 2017). Pharmacodynamic principle indicates effects of drugs on humans whereas the latter indicates the probable ways of absorption of the drugs in the body depending upon the dosage.
The American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) focuses on providing the nurses with high quality health-care input for the patients. This includes health-promoting approaches, enhancing health quality and management of the symptoms. The harmful aspects of the diseases such as mortality and other unfavourable conditions should also be considered. Importance is given on teamwork, maintenance of effectual work-relationships through mutual communication and leadership skills in taking decisions in critical situations (Frankel & PGCMS, 2017). Thus it is evident leadership skills are necessary for providing quality care to a patient under a health-care team. Effective leadership among nurses helps to achieve patient safety along with quick and best possible outcomes from patient. Senior nurses contribute in the organizations by active engagement in assessment and evaluation of nursing practices at the unit and departmental levels. Nursing leaders monitor upon junior nurses in decision-making about patient condition and convalescing through practical learning to enhance on the whole quality care delivery.
The leadership strategies of nursing care are broadly team oriented and influence one another to achieve better patient outcome. It emphasizes relationships between patient-nurse and among team members of the nursing team to gain motivation and attain organizational goals under transformational leadership (Huber, 2013). The leadership strategies thus influences person-centred care for patients, which revolves round patient satisfaction, complications, safety outcomes and mortality, rates including complications. The errors of medications are also reduced greatly under the skills of transformational leadership by followers of the nursing team.
There lies an optimistic relationship between patient safety, satisfaction and leadership styles prevailing among the nurses of the health-care team. With the progression of time, person-centred care has gained privilege in both hospitals as well as post-hospitalization treatment. When under the care of a team, all teammates or caregivers are considered to provide patient safety in whichever ways necessary. Nurses are always advised to build as well as maintain trust with the patient for continuous healing without deterioration (Olsson et al., 2013). Customized care is recommended for each patient as the preferences and the requirements differ in every case due to varying diseases. The patient along with the family members should remain aware about the status of the patient and the responsibility goes to the nurses to make them aware. The care set-up should also be comfortable and this is a priority in most of the organizations (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2015). The essentials of patient-centred care have build up an intense relationship with nursing care plans and leadership strategies (Brooker & Latham, 2015). This, overall, improves the quality of health care provided to each patient and assessment done by the healthcare team. The leadership styles motivates the teammates to enhance further the nursing skills in practical work field. The newly gained knowledge if applied properly in the present work set-up along will definitely improve the quality of care provided by the healthcare team.
