Encourage Reflection Professional Learning
Question:
Discuss About The Encourage Reflection Professional Learning.
Answer:
Introduction
Reflective practice can be considered to be one of the most efficient practice that helps healthcare professionals to study their own experiences and thereby take initiatives to improve their work (Coward 2018). This is one of the best methods of carrying on learning throughout lives which helps individuals to become expert professionals in their career. This is indeed one of the best ways to increase the confidence of the healthcare professionals. This in turn helps the professionals to become more proactive as well as qualified professionals in their lives.
I have identified many important needs that associate with reflective practice in healthcare. It helps in increased learning from an experience as well as situation (John 2017). This could be discussed with the help of an example. Once I had to tackle a patient with bipolar disorder who was prone to self-harm. As I was busy in the shift, I had to apply physical restraints to her to prevent her from self-harm. Later I realised that it had many negative effects on her. She had become depressed as her autonomy and dignity was hurt. Moreover, she had bruised herself from trying to open the restraints that had created wounds on her. I failed to maintain the ethical principle of non-maleficence. After I conducted reflective practice, I came to understand the mistake I had made. Thereby, I developed an action plan to develop my knowledge on the interventions that I could have provided in such time. It helped me to promote a deep learning as well as helped me to indentify my educational needs to handle such patients effectively.
There was another incident where I had become a nurse supervisor for the first time. I allocated the work to my team members who were attending the rehabilitation unit for treating the stroke patients. I got complaints that the patient had long waiting times, the junior and senior nurses argued in front of the patient and there were even unreported cases of medication error for the patient. When I asked them about these issues, they started blaming each other. I could not understand that initiatives that I should have taken in such moments. Therefore, I have to undertake reflective writing, as I could not understand what went wrong in the situations. When I conducted the reflective writing, I understood that the main issue in the teamwork was that there was lack of bond and unity among the members. There were even power struggles and ineffective communication that resulted in such a scenario (Palos et al. 2014). With the help of proper action plan, I was able to develop initiatives that would help in the development of bond and teamwork.
However, there are certain issues that often act as barriers for effective reflection practices. Time act as one of the biggest barrier as after working throughout the day in busy healthcare shifts and handling various patients with different disorders, professionals hardly get time for reflection (Lestander et al. 2016). Moreover, I also sometimes get drained off energy and therefore do not feel like sitting with the reflective practices. However, is should try my best to conduct the reflective practices as I want to be one of the best nursing leaders and reach the zenith of success.
