As a health care supervisor in ABC Hospital, it is noticed that the patients are prone to risks after they have undergone cardiac surgery. I find that lack of modern machines and sufficient health care staff is one of the reasons, which is responsible for such issues in the hospital setting. The opportunity cost in improving the health care service is beneficial as compared to promotion. Opportunity cost refers to the loss that is involved, when a resource is used for one particular thing than other (Mitton & Donaldson, 2004). The economic principle of resource allocation can be implemented for solving the issue. For example, the principle explains about the need of arranging the resources in a proper manner, so that it is possible to reduce complications after cardiac surgeries. It involves keeping proper stock of medicines, surgical equipments and health care staff. It is however needed to allocate sufficient amount of funds, so that adequate initiatives can be taken for reducing growing health issues after cardiac surgery (Scott, Solomon & McGowan, 2001).

This is indeed a growing issue of concern, as it leads to patient mortality and rise in economic costs. Costs enhancement is evitable, as the hospital authority has to spend resources such as money and medication due to prolonged stay of the patients. It is important to address the issue at the earliest post, as operative complications are causing harm to the hospital’s reputation. In this case, the opportunity cost of allocating fund for making proper allocation of resources is that it will help in improving the reputation of hospital. This is because expenditure on promotion is in vain if in reality there is high incidence of post surgery complexities (Mitton & Donaldson, 2004).At present there is a need of allocating $200,000 for reducing the complexities after cardiac surgery. Out of this $100,000 is needed for purchasing modern machines, which can effectively monitor the health status of the patients. Approximately $50,000 is required for purchasing medicines that will be kept in stock and remaining $50,000 is needed for organizing recruitment and training programs to increase the size of workforce along with developing competency.
Reduction in such complications is a holistic approach, which will reflect our sense of duty towards the society. In case, if the problem remains unsolved, then it is difficult for the hospital to pull patients in other units. Such situation is depicted to reduce the revenue earnings and profit margins of the hospital (Peretto, Durante, Limite & Cianflone, 2014; Crystal, Connolly, Sleik, Ginger & Yusuf, 2002). The above mentioned recommendation is depicted to increase the reputation of ABC hospital, patient satisfaction will rise. It is an evidence based practice, which addresses the issue by considering the present situation of the hospital.
