NURS1103 Clinical Nursing Practice 5
Question:
Answer:
My ambition of becoming a nurse finds its origin in my childhood when I stayed with my grandparents. Looking after their medications and meals gave me immense satisfaction and motivated me to pursue nursing as a career. My desire to take up the nursing programme is established by my work experience in the health and social care centre, where I provided holistic care to the patients. This practice helped me work independently, while establishing a good professional relationship with the team members. I focused on improving my active listening and communication skills. This helped me engage in effective verbal and nonverbal conversations with the patients. I also demonstrated sound clinical knowledge and adherence to the standards of maintaining patient confidentiality, shared decision making and information sharing. Empathizing with my clients reinforced their trust. While working in the community setting, I encountered several alcoholic clients. This helped me gain a sound understanding on the underlying factors that contribute to alcoholism and provided the boost to adorn my leadership skills for resolving disputes related to violence and aggression in such context.
My next experience as a healthcare assistant at an elderly ward provided me the opportunity to be a part of a diverse and multidisciplinary team that cared for older adults belonging to a wide range of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. It helped me gain knowledge on the diverse healthcare needs of individual patients. I was involved in formulating appropriate patient care plans, reviewing risk assessment, documenting their medical records, pressure area care and management, handling pressure releasing equipments, evaluating mobility, formulating plans for infection control, and engaging in efficient moving and handling techniques for patience with diseases such as, dementia and stroke. My role as a team player required me to be respectful of the demands of my colleagues. I always tried to identify their strengths and weakness for an effective collaboration. I am currently studying the foundation degree in health and social care for the role of an Assistant Practitioner and will be finishing the course by June this year. This degree will enable me to competently deliver health and social care services to all people while working under the supervision of a registered nursing staff. My caring and compassionate attitude towards the clients and willingness to have a hands-on experience with patients will prove effective in this practice.
Prior to my experience in the health and social care arena, I worked for a short while as a cashier, at a McDonald’s restaurant, where I was responsible for providing direct customer services, and handling goods, while working as a part of the team. Direct interaction with the customers formed the basis of improving my communication skills.
I am a quick learner and a self motivated, hardworking individual. I am capable of responding immediately to changes that occur in my surroundings, and I’m also capable of exhibiting competence and confidence within demanding settings. I have also qualified three ‘O’ levels in English (A), Science (C) and Mathematics (B). I have successfully qualified NVQ at level 2 and 3, as well. My inquisitiveness of being updated in matters related to my work effectively assists in enhancing my professional progress.
Additionally, I am a loving, devoted and caring wife and a mother of three children. My personal experiences have also greatly strengthened my versatility of being empathetic, caring, patient, and creative. I also have good time management skills that enable me to accomplish considerable amount of work, in a brief period of time. I am completely aware that my chosen career will be challenging. However, I am driven by extreme determination to care for patients and make a difference in their lives. I am well acquainted with the fact that a nurse is responsible for dealing with disadvantaged and vulnerable people. A proper conviction of human respect and dignity, and my urgent desire to work in way that will alleviate pain of the distressed individuals are some qualities that are imperative for the career. I feel I have the skills and eligibility of undertaking the nursing program. The course would further help me enhance my competency and skills with regards to appropriate administration of medication, handling instruments such as, the suction machines and oxygen pump, and obtain an exhaustive knowledge on different therapeutic interventions, available for a plethora of diseases. Thereby, I submit my candidature for the nursing program at the University. If provided an opportunity, I will not fall short of expectations and will prove myself as an asset to the profession.
