A personal philosophy of nursing

The nursing profession is more than a job that involves a combination of medical knowledge with a commitment to deliver quality nursing care coupled with dignity, respect, compassion, and patient advocacy (Allison, 2014).

The philosophy is critical because it is a way of finding out what fuels a passion for the profession. It helps people become mentally and emotionally connected to whatever they do. Furthermore, it allows nurses to overcome the demands within the business by remaining true to what drives them (Allison, 2014).

The relationship between the personal philosophy of nursing and professional practice

A personal philosophy is a guide to nurses as they perform duties. It provides an outline of the expectation of nurses and how they are supposed to carry out tasks. Nurses can understand their professional practice and work hard to keep current in skills and knowledge that can help to advance the nursing practice. The philosophy motivates nurses to deliver the best quality care for patient needs, patient safety and empowerment of patients (Allison, 2014).

Theories of nursing

I have studied the ‘Need theory” which emphasizes increasing the independence of clients to enable a continued healing process after hospitalization. Second, the ‘Unitary Human beings’ theory, which sees nursing as a science and an art. The theory seeks to promote interaction between the environment and the person for maximum health. Third, Self-Care theory, states that health is a wholeness of bodily and mental functioning (Jennifer, 2011).

Does your nursing practice follow any theorist?

My nursing practice follows the ‘Self Care’ theory by Dorothy Orem that defines health as the wholeness of human structure, including the body and mental functioning. It includes the social, physical, interpersonal, and physical traits. People should be independent and responsible for their health and others. According to the theory, nursing is a helping service, art, and technology.
