Question:
Discussion: Online Learning Strategies
Completing courses in the absence of a physical classroom and frequent face-to-face contact can be challenging, even for those who are comfortable with technology and the online environment. You need to be able to plan and manage your time well, particularly since there is no structured “class time”; communicate clearly and effectively where there is no visual or nonverbal feedback; and use technology effectively. This Discussion provides you with an opportunity to think about your skills in the above areas, to explore strategies for successful online learning, and exchange strategies with your colleagues.
To prepare:
Review this Week’s assigned readings from the Walden e-Guide and the document, “Technical Tips for Learning at Walden,” in the Learning Resources.
Review this week’s media program, “Tips for Effective Online Composition and Communication.”
Think about some strategies you have used, or read about, that may be beneficial for effective planning, time management, communication, and technology use.
Consider how the strategies you have identified can contribute to being a successful online learner
Answer:
Technical Tips for Learning at Walden
The various technical tips suggested in the video are-
- Post an introduction- the first step would be to post an elaborate introduction about the student. It helps in interacting with other students.
- Choice of words- the words should be chosen carefully. To understand the changes required in a post the student could read the post aloud and identify some changes there. The student should never use slangs or negative language. The posts should be written in a positive note and be respectful.
- Use of “I” statements- while addressing others, the posts should be written in first person so that the burden of communication is kept limited to the student and does not make the post sound accusing (Platt et al., 2014).
- Answer the questions- the student must answer all the questions directed towards him and might ask counter questions.
Tips for Effective Online Composition and Communication
The video suggests a couple of methods for the effective online communication through email. In a professional academic atmosphere, it is very important to maintain prompt communication between the learner and the experts (Xie et al., 2014). The email should be composed in a professional manner and should be written in a much formal tone. The language should should be clear, precise and to the point. Grammatical errors should be avoided at all times as it creates a poor impression in the mind of the receiver.
The email should have a short and precise subject line about the contents of the email. Without a proper subject, it can be very difficult for the receiver to find the email. In some cases, the receiver might delete emails without a subject line.
It is very important to reply to the email in the same thread. Before replying to the email, it is very important to go through the contents of the mail and the previous mails to understand the purpose of the email (Jennings & Hall, 2018). It helps in effective communication with the sender.
Lastly, the email should contain a signature block, which should contain the name, phone number or any other alternate means to contact with the sender.
Strategies to manage online classes
- Select a time: the student should select a particular time of the day to attend to the online class.
- Communicate with the professor: the student should always be in touch with the professor regarding the coursework and the various materials required to finish the assignments.
- Communicate with the classmates- the student should communicate with the other classmates to invite scholarly discussions (Baker, 2016).
- Start early- the student should not wait for the last minute to ask questions during the online class.
- Use of proper technology- the student should access to a proper laptop and a wifi system to smoothly continue with the online class.
Contribution of the strategies
Proper implementation of the strategies will ensure proper time management and the effectiveness of the online classes on the student. The strategies will help the student to benefit from the coursework and successfully complete it.
