Question:
Define a nursing practice area where you could apply Neuman Systems Model. What patient population would you target? How would you use this model to guide best practices? How would nursing outcomes be determined?
Answer:
The Neuman systems model refers to a nursing theory that is based on the relationship of an individual to stress, the subsequent reaction, and associated reconstruction factors that are vibrant in nature (Alligood, 2017). Developed by Betty Neuman, this model comprises of a plethora of energy resources and will be applied in relation to mental health nursing.
According to the model, stressors are defined as the probable warnings that result in the onset of stress, and subsequently disturb balance of the entire system. Furthermore, individuals suffering from mental disorders have been found to remain exposed to numerous stressors that lurk their system (Charles et al., 2013). An individual is considered to have a vital core of straightforward existence mechanisms, such as, ego, temperature control, and organ function. Additionally, the normal line of defense is associated with a state of adaptation and wellness of the person, in accordance to the stressors (Freese & Lawson, 2013). The Neuman’s model will be implemented in the mental health nursing practice owing to the fact that stressors crate an effect on the physical and mental wellbeing of the affected individuals.
The patient population for this model would comprise of people who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Owing to the fact that environment is defined as internal and external forces that surround a person, manipulating and being prejudiced by the individual at a certain time, the model would encompass three tiers of intervention namely, (i) primary, (ii) secondary, and (iii) tertiary. Interventions would encompass allowing the patients to express their mood, feelings, and behaviour (Ahmadi & Sadeghi, 2017). Encouraging them to engage in conversations, and counselling services would be also conducted.
Determination of nursing outcomes would involve use of CAPS, the scale that is considered gold standard for assessing PTSD. To conclude, responses to this structured interview will help in exploring the impact of Neuman’s model on the severity of the mental condition.
