Discussion 1
Nursing is one of the most respected professions by the public. However there are varied perceptions of the Nursing profession by the Public. A significant part of the US population respects nurses for the crucial role they play in promoting the health and safety of patients. In Canada for example, the percentage of members of the public who trust nurses was estimated to be 97% while those who trusted doctors was estimated at 89%(Coban & Yurdagul, 2014).Some members of the public also perceive the nursing profession to be a preserve for females due to the fact that males are perceived as lacking capacity of care. Others perceive nurses as individuals whose responsibility is only to assist doctors in giving medications, dressing wounds and promoting patient’s welfare (Coban & Yurdagul, 2014). The main factor for this perception is lack of public awareness and reliance on misconceptions. These perceptions can be changed through sphere heading media campaigns, through publications demystifying the existing myths and by improving the interactions between nurses and members of the public.
Discussion 2
Critical thinking is the process through which individuals make well-thought-out, logical and reasoned judgment. Evidence based practice refers to the judicious, explicit and conscientious utilization of current best evidence in making decisions touching on patient’s care. In nursing, critical thinking refers to the process through which nurse’s think in a logical and systematic matter to reflect and question their process of reasoning in order to ensure quality care and ensure safe nursing (Finn,2011). By applying critical thinking skills, they question all conclusions and arguments before making a decision. Critical thinking skills are very important for nurses as they enable them to prioritize decisions centered on saving lives and ensuring the welfare of their patients. Critical thinking enables Nurses to make decisions that can save lives and promote the welfare of patients .evidence based practice enables nurses the utilization of evidence in making improved decisions. Both evidence based practice and critical thinking contribute to improving the quality of a patient’s care(Finn,2011).
