Influence of culture / personal beliefs on health: Cultural influence on health-seeking behaviors, cultural beliefs, communicating with different cultures, the role of personal beliefs on health, illness, wellness.

Students will create a poster about a topic relevant to the nursing profession. The assignment may be created individually or in pairs, but no more than three people per group. Posters are a graphically-based approach to presenting the information. The poster should tell a “story” related to the topic and provide the audience with a “snapshot or synopsis” of key points related to the topic. (Note this project is different from the MMP project and you must do both. Also this is a digital poster, not a physical one)

Designing the Poster

The poster should be viewable as if it could be printed on one page. Consideration of the design and arrangement of text and images is important. Your poster should be designed in such a way that your reader will be able to follow the sequence. Navigational cues such as numbers, arrows, or some other visual clue can help your audience follow the logic in your presentation of information. Some tips to help you prepare your poster:

• Carefully research your topic and then edit to ensure you can appropriately address the topic in the space provided; simplicity is important – too much information will get lost in the poster
• Create a storyboard or mock-up of your poster
• Grab attention – choose visuals that will capture attention (and are appropriate and relevant)
• Hold attention – provide useful, precise information that can be read easily from 2-4 feet away
• Use design principles – place related information together, align edges or centers, allow for some open space, use sharp contrasts to add visual interest, establish a color scheme that complements the content
• Use a word processor (or suggested software) to create your text (including captions); minimum font size of 18 points
• Leave time to revise and edit – ask a peer to review the poster before it’s finalized
• Include the title of your topic, and somewhere on the poster, include your name
