Answer:
Introduction:
The student will explain the origin of medicine which is the base for health care. The student should isolate the important events in history that have shaped modern health care. Primary resource materials should be utilized to show the origin of medicine in china, India, Babylon (present-day Iraq) and Egypt. Greek was the first to introduce medical diagnosis, prognosis and medical ethics (Yi, 2016). In the 5th century in Greek the Hippocratic Oath was written. In the middle ages surgical practices were passed from one generation to the next through apprenticeship, because there were no formal medical schools (Bynum, 2013). Apprenticeship went on until the year 1220 in Italy when universities started offering formal medical education. The invention of the germ theory of disease in the 19th century led to the treatment of many infectious diseases and development of public health measures (Porter, 2005). In 1853-1931 Robert Koch made great discoveries regarding bacteriology and in 1891 he started the institute for infectious of infectious diseases where study of bacteriology was the main Aim. In the late 1700s asylum were started for the mentally ill, this was a breakthrough for psychiatric conditions because they would be treated with the urgency they deserve; also this asylums led to the innovation of so many treatment modalities for psychiatric conditions.
Origin and development of nursing
The student should also explain the origin of nursing which is the backbone of health care. Nursing was not a profession up until the 20th century when it was fully acceptable and schools began training nurses, both males and females (Dingwall, 2002). In the past physicians were males only, because they were regarded as superior to women and such technical roles like performing surgery was a noble male profession. Even when nursing was developed by Florence Nightingale, who laid the foundations for nursing as a profession during the Crimean war, and started the first school of nursing in 1860 still, it took a lot of time before nursing was treated with the nobility it deserves. Nursing took another course of action in the 16th century due to the increased incidences of epidemics, diseases communicable and non-communicable and wars. All of these occurrences warranted for the attention of full time nurses and doctors in taking care of the ailing patients (Collen, 2015).
Developments of health care technology
The final activity is the student will explain the development of health care technology. Over the years medical and health care practices have improved tremendously as a result of technology. The microscope was invented in 1590. This medical breakthrough enabled medical professionals to view tiny organisms especially the pathogens that are not visible to the human eye. This great breakthrough is attributed to Hans Lippershey as an improvement of the telescope and Zacharias Jansen who was a spectacle dealer; however the person who truly invented it is not clearly known. Understanding of the human anatomy and physiology continued at a very fast rate because of the passion and interest the human body stirred in scientists.
Health care has greatly improved with the invention of modern medicine, antibiotics, and more humane surgical interventions with the invention of anesthesia and pain control medications, all thanks to the developments in genetics, chemistry and laboratory equipment, which have led to the detailed analysis of disease causing agents (Young, 2017).
