Nursing is regarded as a caring profession which encompasses integrating values of human dignity, autonomy, social justice, altruism and integrity in practice. My desire and interest to become a professional nurse and study about child nursing and mental health nursing emerged after caring for my grandmother who suffered from dementia. I often saw her lying in a disoriented state unable to recall what she did few minutes ago or did she took her lunch or not. That phase of life taught me that I had the talent to assure people and calm them while in distress. I realized that caring for people gave me happiness and a sense of satisfaction. I slowly made up my mind to become a professional nurse.
The extreme desire to study about mental health nursing and child nursing arose after witnessing my grandmother’s daily life struggle due to mental illness. I realized that due to my personal values of empathy and patience, nursing profession would become a very rewarding career for me. After researching about the scope of mental health nursing, I realized that apart from personal satisfaction, there is great demand of mental health nursing job due to prevalence mental health problem in UK. Hence, I decided to pursue mental health nursing as as this degree would support me to secure lives of people suffering from mental disorder and enhance their quality of life. I also have interest in knowing about child psychology and the challenges child nursing can bring for nurses. New and challenging things excite me. Hence, after completing my mental health nursing education, I also aim to expand my skills and study about child nursing too. Another advantage for me is that my personal values are similar to that of nursing values and it would support me in overcoming the challenges in the profession.
