Answer:
In accordance with the article “Fatal Self-Assertion in Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” Lawrence I Berkove critically analyses the Chopin’s “The story of an Hour” which includes the description of emotional condition of a women who suffers in emotional dilemma that causes her death. As portrayed by Chopin, the woman named Louis Mallard died of heart attack which also largely considered by most of the critics. Critics consider that the reason which caused her death is her happiness after seeing her husband whereas Berkove pointed out that instead of happiness it was the feeling of sorrow which she felt after she saw her husband who has been reported to have died in a train accident.
Opposing the idea of other critics which simply states a medical reason behind the death of Mrs. Mallard, Berkove pointed out that the reason behind the death of Mrs. Mallard is not a mere medical reason, it is something more than that. He analyzed the events that took place in the whole course of the story. Berkove mentioned that after Mrs. Mallard the news that her husband has been died in a train accident she locked herself in a room and got the realization of her freedom (Berkove 2000). Instead of being sad about the demise of her husband, Mrs. Mallard was quite excited realizing that she would be able to take her own decisions and would not be dominated by anyone anymore. Highlighting this, Berkove highlighted a complex mental state of Mrs. Mallard who realized the feeling of being freedom only after when her husband died (Berkove 2000). While everyone inclusion g her sister and others was afraid because Mrs. Mallard had a heart condition and after getting the news of her husband’s death she might be crying which can adversely affect her health, Mrs., Mallard were fanaticizing about her independent life without her husband. Thus Berkove opined that the Mrs. Mallard was thinking of her life ahead where there will be no space of her husband.
Berkove remarked that major theme of the story is freedom and confinement. In accordance with the author’s statement of the article, Mrs. Mallard’s reaction to the news of her husband’s death reveals that Mrs. Mallard had been restricted by her husband’s directives and was not leading a happy married life. However, Berkove pointed out that the story did not mention any events which reported any physical torture on her by her husband. The three different events take place in the whole course of the story that establishes the two major theme, confinement and freedom. Until the Mrs. Mallard received the news of the death of her husband, she was portrayed with the feeling of confinement. After she received the news of her death, Mrs. Mallard was seen with the emotion of freedom and finally when she saw her husband entering the house again she was observed with the feeling of confinement.
I completely agree with the Berkove’s analysis of the story which contradicted with the thesis of most of the critics that just expressed a restorative purpose for the demise of Mrs. Mallard and pointed out that the explanation for the passing of Mrs. Mallard is definitely not a negligible medicinal reason, it is something more than that. He rightly examined the occasions that occurred in the entire course of the story. Berkove in a very right manner specified that after Mrs. Mallard had the news that her better half has been died off in the wreck due to a train accident she secured herself in a room and got the acknowledgment of her freedom. Rather than being tragic about the end of her better half, Mrs. Mallard was very excited realizing that she would have the capacity to take her own particular choices and would not be ruled by anybody any longer. Featuring this, Berkove has successfully described how Chopin has a complex mental territory of Mrs. Mallard who understood the sentiment of being independent simply after when she received the news that her better half has died off an accident. While everyone consisting of her sister and others was anxious on the grounds that Mrs. Mallard has a serious condition and in the wake of getting the news of her better half’s demise she may cry which can unfavorably influence her wellbeing, Mrs., Mallard were fanaticizing about her autonomous existence without her husband. In this manner I agree with the opinion of Berkove that the Mrs. Mallard was thinking about her life ahead where there will be no space of her better half.
After reading the story I go along with Berkove as he commented that actual theme of the story is oppression and repression. As per the writer’s comment in the article, Mrs. Mallard’s response to the news of her better half’s passing uncovers that Mrs. Mallard had been limited by her husband’s mandates and was not having a happy marital bliss in her life. I addition to that, Berkove called attention to that the story did not say any occasions which detailed any physical torment on her by her better half. The three distinct occasions happens in the entire course of the story that builds up the two noteworthy themes, freedom and confinement. Until the point that the Mrs. Mallard received the news of the passing of her better half, she was depicted with the sentiment of restriction. After she received the news of her demise, Mrs. Mallard was seen with the feeling of flexibility lastly when she saw her husband coming back in her life not only in the house again she was seen with the sentiment of restriction.
Thus to conclude it will be apt to assert that Berkove’s analysis of the story is very much appropriate and he did a justice by critically analyze that. His analysis helped the readers understand the hidden idea behind the story, to be more specific; Berkove’s analysis revealed the purpose of Chopin was to portray the condition of women in the then society.
