PNUR124 Practical Nursing Theory
Question:
Explain and summarize practice theories, examples?
Answer:
Practice theory is the relationship between the intention of human beings and the environment in which they live in. This theory places human actions on one side and global entity on another side, so that the structural and methodological individualism can outline various social phenomenon (Wikipedia, 2018). There are different approaches to practice theory given by various social theorists but none is termed as perfect. Michael Foucault developed the concept of discipline which is described to have been impressed on the body to form permanent dispositions. The relationship between practice and nursing theory is that in nursing, ideas are structured by nurses to offer a purposeful and tentative view of the phenomena. The systematic inquiry process enables nurses to create knowledge aimed at improving the care of the patients (Lewis et al., 2016). The concept of discipline sin nurses enables nurses to be confined within the practices of nursing. Practice theory guides nurses in determining what is right and wrong (body) and hence the nature of their practice (environment). The nurses should not borrow theories from other fields and assume that they will work in their practice every time.
Examples
An example is the adoption of prisons by the government so as to regulate body practices as a form of disciplinary power. In nursing, a nurse taking care of an elderly patient needs to understand the health history as well as current conditions in order to offer best care (McCormack & McCance, 2016). This also changes the nurses’ philosophy, practice, behaviors and ethical practices in health care settings.
