Introduction
This assignment have been a concept map for the nursing educators to be able to implement one of the most influential learning theories, the experiential learning theory by Kolb and how it can be facilitated in the real world scenario by the help of a facilitation model by the Hoshin Kanri (6). This second section will present a reflective account for the concept map preparation taking the assistance of the Rolfe model.
What?
For this assignment, I had been given the opportunity to prepare a concept map linking one learning theory with the facilitation model. I had chosen the experiential learning process for the concept map as in the field of nursing; the learning is most preferably based on the experiences gained in the practical real world scenarios (3). There are four steps to the experiential learning theory and I had attempted to align all four steps and their consequential actions with the seven steps of the facilitation model developed by Hoshin Kanri for developing strategic plans.
So what?
Experiential learning can be defined as the process of learning through the experiences gained by the learner and hence this particular learning theory is based on the aspect of learning doing (1). It has to be understood that in the nursing practice the impact of silent knowledge or the knowledge gained by the experience is vital and hence I had chosen the experiential learning theory for this assessment. Elaborating more, it has to be mentioned in this context the process of learning is facilitated in a quicker method when the learning is based on objects and pathways that pertains to the learners personally. This assessment exercise has helped me not just understand the theoretical aspects of the different steps of the theory but also link them to the practical scenario based steps of the facilitation model.
There had been 4 steps to the learning theory, concrete learning which can be facilitated by group based, field based or personal learning experiences helps in developing the need for learning process in the students which in turn leads to development of the strategic learning plans (2). I have also understood that developing new teaching tactics and strategic objectives are essential for the facilitator of the learning process to implement the learning plan and reach the students with success. And these steps are intricately linked with reflective observation and abstract conceptualization steps of the experiential learning theory (5). Hence, the experiential learning by Kolb is a very important tool for the nursing educators to facilitate a learning development plan in the practice scenario.
Now what?
This exercise on concept map construction had been an exceptional experience for me to understand the role of learning theories and how it can be facilitated in the real world scenario. Along with that, this exercise and the research I have conducted for it has unraveled different interrelated theoretical concepts in experience or reflection based learning. I would apply the knowledge gained in my future work scenario to learn from my experiences and help my peers and mentees with a strategic learning plan based on this experience based learning in order to assist them with skill enhancement and continuous professional development while in practice.
