Question:
Answer:
The paper deals with the health issue of childhood obesity in Australia. In response to the issue, the paper presents the research elements of the qualitative article on this subject. The paper “Exploring factors influencing childhood obesity prevention Among Migrant Communities, in Victoria, Australia”by Renzaho et al. (2017) is published in the year 2017 is chosen for this purpose.
Qualitative research
Qualitative research is the social science research that deals with the non-numerical or descriptive data and involves interpretation of the data for findings its meaning. It is the research methodology that is used for addressing inquiry related to social and natural sciences and different academic disciplines. Qualitative research can also be conducted for inquiry into the non-academic context such as market research, service analysis of non-profit organisation and others. It is the exploration of the social life of the target population or locations. Qualitative research is typically focused on the investigating the meanings that people attribute to their attitude, behaviour, and interactions with other. The descriptive data then requires to be analysed using rigorous methods such as transcription, coding, themes and analysis (Creswell & Poth, 2017).
Methodology
Research methodology is defined as different methods used in the study and its systemic and theoretical analysis. Research methodology is the scientific method of doing research and solving the problem systematically (Taylor et al., 2015).
In the article by Renzaho et al. (2017), exploratory qualitative design was used to understand the beliefs and attitudes of the migrant parents towards childhood obesity and prevention. Therefore, the study has recruited the migrant parents living in Melbourne, Victoria. The inclusion criteria is the socioeconomically disadvantaged population, born in overseas, proficient in language other than English and lastly had one or more children aged <15 years. Convenience sampling was used and 48 migrant parents were interviewed. The data collection method used was Individual semi-structured interviews. It included open and focused two way communication.
Ethics
Research ethics is defined as analysis of the ethical issues that are bound to arise when dealing with the human subjects in the study (Silverman, 2016). In the article, the researcher has complied with the ethical standards of the “Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee”. Further, the research was conducted by obtaining informed consent from the participants. Bilingual staff was used to avoid language barriers in interview. The ethics committee approved the study (Renzaho et al., 2017).
Findings and results
Research findings and results are defined as principle outcomes of the study being conducted and the interpretations, recommendations and concussions drawn from them (Lewis, 2015).
The thematic analysis by Renzaho et al. (2017) showed that the migrant parents lack the obesity literacy. They lack healthy lifestyle due to cultural influences and living in socioeconomically disadvantaged community. They fail to participate in the childhood obesity prevention initiatives due to cultural barriers, community and family level barriers. Thus, the findings show the need of increasing the obesity literacy.
Conclusion
The study of the qualitative article has helped to understand the research elements used in a qualitative research paradigm-using semi structured interview. The assignment was helpful in conducting the research and extracting journal article.
